BRIEF
Karate Kid: Legends is a the sixth installment in the Karate Kid franchise and tells the story of Li Fong, a kung fu prodigy moving to New York. When he gets into an altercation with a local karate champion Conor Day, Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han is brought back as his karate and kung fu mentors respectively.

Plucky was tasked to design and animate different GFX needs throughout the movie. This visual look takes a screenprinted approach, with a limited but punchy color palette.

I desigined multiple style frames in this look ready for final animation.

MIYAGI AND HAN FAMILY HISTORY

CONTEXT
This sequence comes at the beginning of the movie. Mr. Miyagi narrates to young Daniel LaRusso about the origins of the relationship of the Miyagi and Han family. His ancestor, Shimpo Miyagi, ends up in China after fishing off the coast of Okinawa. The Han family took him in and taught him the art of kung fu. As a token of respect and gratitude, he gifts them a bonsai tree to symbolize the strength of their bond before his return to Japan.

FIVE BOROUGHS TOURNAMENT RULES

CONTEXT
The movie culminates in the Five Boroughs Tournament, where Li comes head to head with Conor. The tournament has 4 rules that decide how each fighter gets points.

PITCH

CONCEPT
This pitch was created for the narration sequence telling the history of the Miyagi and Han family. The entire sequence takes place on a long paper scroll, merging traditional Chinese and Japanese ink paintings with comic books. Layers of strokes and washes create depth and brings the scroll alive.
